StoryMap of State-led Changes in Long Island City

“Change” has come to define Long Island City, and increasingly Western Queens, as new buildings – and land values – go up, and working-class tenants, small manufacturing and businesses, and independents artists are pushed out. The City and its agencies often describe these changes in relation to trends, as though they were inevitable and unstoppable. But that’s not true. Instead, these changes have been provoked by decisions made by the City.

Understanding Change in Context provides insight into these decisions and the connects them to some of the changes we see today. Moreover, it highlights the ongoing affront by the city today, and the critical community efforts that have swelled to protect their homes and communities.
